Established in 2000, Innisfree is South Korea’s first all-natural beauty and skin care brand. Its name, taken from the W.B. Yeats poem “The Lake Isle of Innisfree,” is a perfect ode to its products’ origins. After all, 70% of each and every Innisfree product is made from all-natural ingredients sourced from Jeju Island. Those ingredients include the popular Jeju volcanic clay, which is famed for its oil-absorbent properties; and Jeju green tea, a popular anti-aging element. As such, it is one of the few Korean brands that use ingredients that are certified organic by the French organization ECOCERT.
Hence, it’s no surprise that many South Koreans—including celebrities—have incorporated Innisfree products into their skincare routines. Celebrity endorsers have included Yoona of the group Girls Generation, actress Kim Tae-hee, and actor Lee Min-ho. The brand is also starting to make waves worldwide, with boutiques now open in Japan, Hong Kong, Mainland China, India, Malaysia and Singapore. These include a bottle-recycling initiative, which has collected almost 9 million bottles since 2000. In the same timeframe, it has also distributed around 292,000 eco-handkerchiefs, encouraging people to minimize their use of tissue paper across the country. Innisfree has also donated 1% of its annual profit to environmental causes since its inception, with total donations now amounting to around 3.1 billion Won.
